Leilah began practicing Ashtanga Yoga in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in early 2005, and has been practicing with senior certified and authorized teachers in the lineage ever since. Beginning with Annie Pace, Mary Taylor, Richard Freeman, and Joan Isbell in Colorado, Leilah soon traveled to Mysore, India to practice with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Sharat Jois. Since then she has made several extended trips to India to practice and study with some of the most highly-regarded Ashtanga teachers in the world at Purple Valley Ashtanga Yoga Centre in Goa. Her teachers there include Petri Raisanan, Dena Kingsberg, Sharmila Desai, Mark Robberds, Gretchen Suarez, David Robson, and John Scott. Leilah also continues to travel to Mysore to practice with Sharat Jois at KPJAYI.
Leilah has been teaching Ashtanga since 2007, after attending Tim Miller’s Teacher’s Intensive in Tulum, Mexico. She began as a substitute when her teachers went to Mysore, and soon initiated a small class of her own in the ballroom of Denver’s beloved and very cool Mercury Cafe. Consistently seeking to deepen her understanding of Ashtanga Yoga and the art of teaching, Leilah completed Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor’s month-long Teachers’ Intensive in Boulder, CO in the summer of 2016, and a 200-hour month-long teacher training retreat with Joey Miles in Goa, India in June 2018.
She has also assisted senior teacher Petri Raisanen on multiple occasions. While continuing to learn from the very best, Leilah has taught around the world, ranging from her home in the Pacific Northwest, to the foothills of the Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh, to the tropical paradise of Southeast Asia.
Leilah currently teaches a traditional morning Mysore program at Burning Spirits Yoga in Portland OR.
Leilah is also an avid handstander, and is fascinated by where yoga and strength training intersect. She teaches handstand workshops, and leads classes on how to build strength for yoga.
